CompuServe offers data backup/retrieval

CompuServe today announced an agreement with Pittsburgh-based Surefind Information, Inc. to provide subscribers with online data backup and retrieval services.

CompuServe will be the sole online marketer of the service, which enables users to automatically back up their PC data files to Surefind electronic vaults via the users' PC modem.

The data will be encrypted and password-protected to ensure privacy and security. It can then be recovered if files are lost, but cannot be overwritten or destroyed by being stored on optical platters using write-once-read-many (WORM) technology, according to officials.
