Compaq reorganizes for networks

Compaq Computer announced a reorganization intended mainly to take advantage of the exploding Internet and intranet markets and an increased demand for bundled solutions.

The changes are not coming without casualties, however. Compaq also announced the resignation of Gary Stimac, senior vice president and general manager of the Systems Division, who was with the company for 14 years. The press release gave no reason for his departure.

The new structure breaks the company into three groups: the Consumer Products Group, the PC Products Group, and a new Enterprise Computing Group.

John Rose is to head the Enterprise Computing Group, which will focus on building a new workstation business in addition to Compaq's current server market. Michael Winkler is slated to head the PC Products Group, which will include desktop, portable PCs and product development for the small to medium-sized business market segment. The Consumer Products Group, responsible for Compaq's growing consumer business, will continue to be directed by senior vice president and group general manager Michael Heil.

The company did not specify any product marketing changes attendant to the reorganization.
