Compaq adds speed, drops prices
Compaq decides to add more muscle to its flagship LTE line of notebook computers by adding a 150-MHz Pentium processor model while also cutting prices on existing LTE and Armada models.
The company also announced price reductions of up to 18 percent on current LTE 5000 portables and price cuts of up to 21 percent on Armada 1100 notebooks.
The new LTE 5400 uses the 150-MHz Mobile Pentium processor, has a 12.1-inch active-matrix display with 800-by-600 resolution, 32MB of RAM, and a 2.16GB smart hard drive. Compaq says the model is currently shipping with prices starting at $5,599. The company also announced the availability of the LTE 5380 with 133-MHz Pentium and 256K of level-2 cache; prices start at $5,499.
Compaq cut the price on the 120-MHz Intel Pentium processor models in the LTE family, with the 5250 reduced from $3,799 to $3,199, a savings of 18 percent. The 5280, with a 11.3-inch active-matrix screen, was priced at $4,599 and will now be priced at $3,899, also an 18 percent reduction.
In the Armada family of entry-level notebooks, which feature 100-MHz Pentium processors and 810MB hard drives, the Armada 1120 with a 10.4-inch color dual-scan VGA screen was priced at $1,899 but is now priced at $1,499, a reduction of 21 percent. The Armada 1120T with a 10.4-inch color active-matrix VGA screen was priced at $2,299 but is now priced at $1,999, a reduction of 13 percent.
In related news, Compaq cut the price on its SpeedPaq 28.8 Telephony modem from $299 to $211. The PC Card modem supports features such as answering machine capability and can send and receive faxes as well as data.
