Grilling is an active endeavor that requires making choices. Like any other cooking method, decisions must be made about what to prepare. For the grill, the options are seemingly endless. This is how it should be: a versatile heat source should be capable of producing versions of almost anything. However when looking to cook a quality meal on the grill, the list of choices to make usually do not include whether to go outside or to stay inside. Or if one should mortgage the house.

The Lynx Downtown Electric Grill ($1,499.95) is rated for indoor or outdoor use. The 1,800-watt electric grill measures about 27 inches by 19 inches with a height of 6 inches. The unit weighs 42 pounds. Capable of achieving temperatures of up to 700 degrees Fahrenheit (it can also display temperature in Celsius), the high-powered grill looks to mimic the performance of gas or charcoal grills, but without an open flame.

The high-end grill obviously represents a commitment no matter what one decides to cook or where. For those willing to shell out the cash, they will be getting benefits such as consistent heat distribution and actual grilling surface temperature readout in addition to the high-performance nature of the grill. A relatively new technology, developed by the firm ThermoCeramix, makes this possible. A thermal film coating is applied to the underside of the grilling surface, resulting in the uniform heat distribution as well the exceptionally high temperature ceiling.

As it sneaks into traditional retailers, the versatile grill is sure to start finding homes (especially as the price settles in). Of course, what to cook on it will still have to be a decision, but luckily that will be a much more delicious one to make.
