Commerce One appoints COO

The business-to-business software maker names Dennis H. Jones, head of information technology for Federal Express, as its chief operating officer.

Commerce One on Tuesday named Dennis H. Jones, head of information technology for Federal Express, as its chief operating officer.

Jones, 48, will report to Mark Hoffman, chief executive at the business-to-business software maker, and will be responsible for the company's engineering, marketing, financial, legal and administrative operations, the company said in a statement.

The appointment fills a position vacated last week by Robert M. Kimmitt, who was promoted from chief operating officer to president. Kimmitt joined Commerce One in February.

The Pleasanton, Calif.-based company, which last week warned of weaker-than-expected quarterly results, competes against companies such as Ariba, Oracle and i2 Technologies, making software that helps buyers and suppliers automate their business processes online and connect over the Internet. The company also hosts electronic marketplaces.

Jones' appointment comes as the business-to-business software market has been rocked by earnings warnings and layoffs from a host of software makers in the sector.

Jones spent 25 years at FedEx, where he led a number of information technology initiatives, including the development of Web-based package processing and shipment tracking. He also sat on the executive team responsible for developing strategy for the $20 billion shipping giant.

Commerce One said Jones' appointment is effective immediately.
