CNET.com.au's Top Games for August

The hot Christmas 2005 games releases may still be a few months away, but here's some top quality titles released in August that'll help you pass the time.

The hot Christmas 2005 games releases may still be a few months away, but here's some top quality titles released in August that'll help you pass the time.

It's definitely an eclectic mix of top game titles in August, starting with the addictive Sid Meier's Pirates for the Xbox, which is as good if not better than the original PC game released late last year. If you've ever dreamed of living a buccaneer's life on the high seas, then this game gets as close to being a pirate simulator as you can get.

If combat by rapiers and pistols isn't your cup of tea, then fast forward into the future with Battlefield 2 for the PC, a top notch action game set in the modern era. The beauty of Battlefield 2 is the fact that, like its predecessors, it does an outstanding job of immersing you in the chaos of 20th century battle. Lone players probably won't find much in Battlefield 2, but if it's team-based combat you're after, this game's hard to beat.

Shiver me timbers! Pirates is a great adventure game for the Xbox.

While Battlefield 2 goes for realism, Killer 7 for the PS2 goes for the other end of the spectrum completely. This stylised, over the top, violent and politically charged game is equal parts weird and innovative -- both stylistically and in terms of gameplay. It may not suit all tastes, but it's certainly a unique game experience.

Finally, PS2's Formula One 05 is the latest game in the long running F1 series, and in many ways it's the best yet. Outstanding graphics, varying degrees of difficulty (which allow even novices to start racing against the greats straight away) and tight controls all add up to a fun racing simulator.
