CNET buys free-software directory site

CNET Networks announces it has acquired AppWatch, a directory of free and open-source software downloads, on undisclosed terms.

CNET Networks announced Friday that it has acquired AppWatch, a directory of free and open-source software downloads, on undisclosed terms.

AppWatch allows information technology professionals to download Linux drivers, utilities and applications.

CNET, the publisher of News.com, said AppWatch downloads will be integrated into its CNET enterprise business channel and its ZDNet Business and Technology channel. CNET recently acquired ZDNet.

Linux and other open-source applications are becoming increasingly popular. According to research firm IDC, the Linux market, including embedded Linux, is expected to reach more than $11 billion by 2001. By sector, hardware is expected to total $6 billion in 2001 and embedded software is likely to amount to $5.2 billion.
