The next issue will be the last for LANTimes, a magazine dedicated to computing over local area networks, after publisher CMP Media announced today it would shut the publication as part of a major corporate restructuring.

In addition to closing the magazine, CMP Media also launched a new technology research and consulting firm dubbed Reality Research, and the company's Information Week will team with Business Week for a series of conferences aimed at corporate executives.

The biweekly LANTimes had a circulation of 215,000, reaching network and IS managers at mid- and large-sized companies. LANTimes will publish its last issue October 26. The company said it will fold the magazine's circulation, labs, and much of the staff into its Internet Week and Network Computing publications.

"The LAN is really an '80s thing and the Internet is the network of today," said Steve Rubel, a CMP spokesman. "The fit is better with Internet Week."

LANTimes was one of five publications CMP bought from McGraw-Hill in May. CMP also closed Byte magazine in May.

The company's new Reality Research firm was created to compete with companies such as Forrester Research, International Data Corporation, and Dataquest.

The CIO/CEO executive business conferences will take place at the same time as existing electronic business expos being hosted by CMP's business forum unit, in June 1999 and December 1999.

Stock in CMP fell .375 or more than 4 percent to 8.75 today. The shares have traded as high as 28.5 and as low as 7.75 during the past 52 weeks.
