The Santa Cruz Operation, which writes Unix software for Intel-based computers, will announce Tuesday what it calls the first client software for network computers (NCs) that use Intel chips.

The NC/OS technology, which is available now to system manufacturers, will integrate an embedded 1.5MB Unix operating system, Netscape Communications' Navigator 2.1 Web browser, TCP/IP networking, and the Java Virtual Machine to run Java applets.

SCO will make NCs a major focus of its annual conference next week in Santa Cruz, which chairman of Sun Microsystems and NC fan Scott McNealy will keynote.

An NC pavilion will have more than a dozen NC hardware and software vendors. Exhibitors include Apple Computer, HDS Network Systems, SunRiver Data Systems, start-up Diba, NetChannel, Idea, MacSpeed and View Call America.
