Clarent on Tuesday released new technology that allows consumers and businesses to make phone calls over high-speed Net access. The new Internet telephony equipment are the first products from Clarent's "local access" business unit. They are aimed at allowing telecommunications service providers to offer new voice services, such as Net-based conference calling, to businesses and consumers, said Daniel Fung, president of Clarent's Local Access business unit.
Clarent's new products include software that manages calls and hardware for homes and businesses. With its entry into the new market, Clarent is competing against Cisco Systems, Sonus Networks, Motorola and others, Fung said.
