Can Samsung buy your loyalty for $100? (The 3:59, Ep. 123)

Plus we talk about the NYPD's official phone, as well as President Obama's budding cyberwar with Russia.

Samsung is giving you 100 new reasons to trade in your Galaxy Note 7.

The company is offering $100 in credit for anyone who trades their Note 7 in for a new Samsung phone. If you want to switch to another brand, you'll get $25.

Think of it as the start of Samsung's mission to win back its customers. It's also an incentive to get those fire-prone Note 7 units out of circulation. We discuss whether it's enough to repair its reputation.

We also talk about the surprising choice for the New York Police Department's official phone, and the potential secret cyberwar brewing between the US and Russia.

The 3:59 gives you bite-size news and analysis about the top stories of the day, brought to you by the CNET News team in New York and producer Bryan VanGelder.
