#Calexit secession movement trends on Twitter

If you can't beat 'em, leave 'em, or so goes the Brexit-inspired movement for California to secede from the US in response to Donald Trump's win Tuesday.

So, social media (and all media actually) got it wrong with the predicted outcome of the US presidential election.

#Calexit was trending nationally on Twitter Wednesday morning.

But it's moving onward and upward...or at least westerly in the case of #Calexit.

The Brexit-inspired hashtag for a movement calling for California's secession from the US is trending on Twitter Wednesday, the day after Donald Trump was elected in big national election victory for Republicans.

Other popular related hashtags include #Califexit and #Caleavefornia.

Humor aside, the sentiment in left-leaning California can't be ignored. The state is the world's sixth-largest economy with a gross domestic product of about $2.5 trillion.

Another hashtag, #WestCoastSecession, includes other Western blue states like Oregon, Washington and Nevada.
