Cabletron flips new switch

Cabletron Systems will announce new remote access products at the Networld+Interop show in Paris that stretch from the central site rack to the branch office.

Cabletron Systems (CS) will announce new remote access products at the Networld+Interop show in Paris that stretch from the central site rack to the branch office.

The new CyberSwitch line will feature a carrier-class remote access switch to several flexible low-end models for the small office/home office (SOHO) market.

For large sites, Cabletron will offer the CSX 7000, a 16-slot chassis with support for ISDN, digital modems, frame relay, dedicated lines, and X.25. The chassis can support 48 basic rate interfaces or 12 primary rate interfaces.

The CSX 7000 also provides bridge-router interface modules so that existing customers can take advantage of ISDN connectivity throughout the network. Addressing the branch office market, Cabletron will announce four models: the CSX 6000, 1200, 400, and 200.

The 6000 is similar to the 7000, only it has half the slots. The 1200 provides ISDN support while connecting to the local area network via an Ethernet interface. The 400 and 200 provide flexible LAN and wide area network, with the 200 able to incorporate the benefits of a switch, hub, and router in one device.

To manage the new central site devices, Cabletron is adding a Microsoft Windows NT-based Virtual Remote Access (VRA) Manager to its SecureFast line of device management tools. The software offers centralized configuration, security, and reporting functions, all done in real time.

The CSX 6000 and 7000 are available immediately at prices starting at $3,000. The 1200 line will be available within 60 days at prices starting at $4,240. The 400 product will be available within 60 days for $5,105. The 200 series will be available within 30 days at prices starting at $4,090. The VRA Manager server 1.0 is available now for $4,995, with a device license available for $995.
