Buzz Out Loud 1538: Bunny Out Loud (Podcast)

On today's show, cute-animal-song wunderkind Parry Gripp joins us to talk about his new Baby Monkey iPhone game, and he's represented by the cutest bunny ever. Seriously. We can barely focus. Seriously. Also, Facebook's major sweeping privacy changes mean you can finally erase your ex from your profile, which is actually kind of awesome. And how "2001: A Space Odyssey" apparently constitutes prior art for tablet design. Oh, yeah.

In 2001 the east coast mobile networks were overloaded to the point of being non-functional after the attacks in New York and D.C. Ten years later, the eastern states are hit by an earthquake, and again the mobile networks were unusable. Now of course emergencies prompt people to reach for their phones and call people they care about, but in ten years the mobile carriers were apparently unable to bolster their networks to better handle usage spikes. You know what worked? My land line. And I’m not giving it up until they forcefully pull the copper wires out of my house.

Hi Buzz Crew,

A few days ago, the news that the next iOS has early earthquake warning system built in, which is common (almost all mobile phones release by Japanese manufacturers have it embedded).

However, many people here in/around Tokyo turn it off :(

Actually, when I bought Android smartphone from HTC about 1.5 year ago, the shopkeeper from the mobile company asked if it’s “”really”" OK that it doesn’t have early earthquake alert system!

Right now, some Americans might start thinking if they should also have the alert system on the mobile phones… well, it might be useful…
There’re plenty of case studies here in Japan from which you can learn a lot :)

P.S. I’ve guessed that Sharon’s family is originally from Russia, since her name Vaknin sounds kind of similar to Russian writer “”Akunin”".
He takes his pen name from Japanese word “”akunin”", which means “”evil man”" :)

Greetings Team BOL:
Regarding the Mute feature in Google+, Facebook had a similar feature that it quietly rolled out last year called “”Unsubscribe”" available via Wall Posts. It was very useful to cut out a lot of the comment noise that may not mean anything to me. Then, as Facebook tends to do, it quietly took that feature away unannounced, without any explanation (also typical of Facebook).

The feature has returned now as part of its recent Groups relaunch. Still, I’m more wary of participating in comments these days...Fail, Facebook!

Love the show!

Thanks,
Velanche (Va-LAN-chee)

Molly,

In episode 1537, you mention that you're having issues with your Sony Dash. I bought my boyfriend a Sony Dash at full price a little more than a year ago. A few months ago, we noticed the screen separating from the rest of the unit. It started almost hanging out....only connected by the bottom of the screen, but it still worked. This last weekend, I gingerly pressed the screen back in to the unit, and it immediately stopped working....completely kaput. Considering that my Sony XBR TV started having severe ghosting issues and my boyfriend's Sony Z series laptop trackpad stopped working – both almost exactly 1 yr after purchase, I'm beginning to think that Sony only makes electronics to last through the warranty. I used to prefer Sony electronics, but I see no reason to pay a "premium" for devices that aren't going to last.

Love the show,

Buzzers,

Every time I hear HP say they are excited about putting WebOS on printers, a part of my soul dies. WebOS is essentially a Linux kernel with Java apps running on top. What was stopping HP from doing this for years, the oh so proprietary Linux kernel or the new fangled technology of Java? Its not like they get the advantage of the WebOS ecosystem, they’ve just made every one of their devs hate them, and I can’t imagine many apps made for phones and tablets would have any utility on a printer anyway. Essentially the only advantage is already having an established SDK. So ends my nerd rage rant.
