Buzz Out Loud 1433: George Hotz and the Girls Gone Wild defense (Podcast)

Sony PS3 jailbreaker George Hotz scampers down to South America to avoid having to turn over his possessions to Sony -- but claimed he's just there on spring break. Um. Ok, dude. Also, Apple's grand plans to take over the Internet completely, the new Color app that either is or isn't the most amazing startup that ever existed, and record labels' attempts to sue Limewire for $75 trillion. Not a typo. Neither is the Duke Nukem delay. --Molly

Happy Ending

Apparently Comcast has decided that, rather than actually do anything about the problems that make it a perennial favorite, it will just beg its employees to vote -- multiple times -- for the other guy in the Consumerist poll for “”Worst Company in America”". I have a friend who works there that logged into the company Intranet and confirmed that indeed yes, they are being asked to do this. As many times as they can. From as many different IP addresses as they can. WOW. Just, WOW.

EMAILS

Hey Buzz Team (whoever that is today ;-) ),

I just wanted to share an email I got from Netflix. You mentioned in the last episode that Netflix had a big outage the other night. I don’t know whether this email was a universal notice or just the result of some weirdness for MY service, but Netflix just gave me a 3% credit toward my next bill.

Now 3% of $8 is a pretty small number, but I certainly appreciate the sentiment they are trying to convey. Plus, I’m sure that if this is a universal 3% credit to all of their customers that it IS a lot of money to them!

I think this is evidence that Netflix sits squarely in the Not Evil camp. Compare them to Comcast – when was the last time you got a credit for a Comcast outage?!

Love the show,

Hey Buzz Crew,

Nobody ever used the term “”app store”" before Apple? Hmm…

http://www.informationweek.com/news/internet/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=196603550
http://www.salesforce.com/company/news-press/press-releases/2006/12/061212-1.jsp

It seems to me like Apple stole the idea from Sales Force, who coined the term in 2006, before the iPhone was even unveiled (January 2007), and long before it ever got an “”App Store”" (July 2008). Even the idea of the Sales Force AppStore was inspired by the iTunes Music Store. The amazing part is, Apple didn’t file the trademark on App Store until 2008, a full 2 years after Sales Force coined the term.

Just sayin’, if I were Amazon, I’d probably be emailing those links to sjobs@apple.com.

Love the show,

Russell (from Chicago)

SWEET 1337 Mod! There will always be a place in my heart for classic NES making a DIY console out of an old cartridge is just sweet! Check out the link for pics and DIY how-to! Probably a little beyond my abilities, but could be a neat weekend project! Ben Heck would be proud!

Love,
