Buzz Out Loud 1428: Jailbreak Geohotz (podcast)

On today's show, Time Warner's new live TV iPad app is too cool to last very long, iOS is slower than Android (but Apple's nit-picking the results, predictably), and Sony is continuing to try to turn George Hotz into a smoking crater for daring to jailbreak the PS3. --Molly

Hey Guys,

Welcome back from SXSW. Hope the grub and weather treated you well.

Now, as to your read and comments in episode 1427 on the subject of Obama’s IP czar "wishing" to make unauthorized streaming a felony— as a licensed internet broadcaster I must point out a big boo-boo. Brian remarked that internet radio stations do not pay performance royalties. BUZZZ...wrong. That would be the conventional terrestrial radio stations at the moment.

Legal internet broadcasters on the other hand have been paying performance royalties out the wazoo for quite some time now. As much as you guys have covered Pandora's tale of woe recently and Internet Radio's "Day of Silence" back in 2007...can't believe that one slipped off Brian's tongue. Then again, Brian maybe you just weren't "tuned in" back then...or maybe it was just the SXSW decompression and a rushed read performance to get the show out. In any event, I'll give you slack as long as you note the correction.

As to the overall gist of the Obama Czar's "attack" on streaming...I'm sure that she means to focus on the plethora of unlicensed radio and video broadcasters. Not so much the consumers as Molly later insinuated. No fear Molly....no one's going to come snatch your Air for tuning into some "unmarked" station on shoutCAST. ;)

Love the show...keep on keeping it fun,

david

Hi Buzz Crew. Love the show!!!

I am curious about your opinions regarding the article Jon Bon Jovi wrote in last weekend’s New York Times, blaming Steve Jobs for ruining the music industry? I’ll admit I am an Apple convert…but really? It is Steve Jobs’ fault that the music industry is currently in the dumps? Please!!! Just wanted to share.

Thanks,

Tyler from Loveland, Colorado

Hi buzz crew,

My name is Andrew and I live in Saitama Japan. Saitama is just north and west of Tokyo and about 176 miles west and south of Fukushima.

I was listening to your show when you talked about public wifi here. Yes it is the case that free public wifi is rare, however most cellphones have some basic Internet features and many people have mobile Internet connections for laptops too.

When the quake hit Friday afternoon, I was not able to make phone calls, but I was still able to use Skype and access yahoo mail.

I found out through an email that my wife was fine and would be walking home from her office in Tokyo.

because my phone (as do many phones here) has 1seg TV I was able to get news and information from NHK.

Thank you Molly for auctioning your ipad I know many people here who can use all the help they can get.

Love the show,

Andrew
