Why would anyone want to develop for the iPhone/iPad? For the same reason that people develop for the Xbox, or the PS3 (particularly services like the PSN and Xbox Live Arcade). This kind of treatment of developers happens all the time in the console gaming development cycle, it just happens behind closed doors most of the time. That doesn’t mean it isn’t wrong, but Apple’s “treatment” of developers is hardly unprecedented and because of that it’s unlikely to negatively impact the number of developers who want to develop for their platforms.

Besides, I think all this housecleaning is leading up to something. What? I don’t know, but it seems odd for them to suddenly pounce on certain apps and certain kinds of apps without warning. I foresee some major changes to their app store (and app submission process) coming soon – maybe more clarity on what apps will and will not be accepted?

(Oh and also Molly, you mentioned that you don’t think the iPad will sell very well and I have UNDENIABLE, SCIENTIFIC PROOF that you’re wrong! In Mass Effect 2 (which is, in the future) everyone is walking around with an iPad-esque tablety device! SCIENCE.)

Hi buzz crew,

I was just listening to the episode 1177 where you talking about the new TIVO’s and how if you wanted wifi you would need to buy a $90 add on. I thought I’d share with you what I’ve done to get around buying all the add on adapters companies try to nickel and hundred dollar you to death. I use an Apple Airport Express to extend my wifi to my home theatre and I’ve connected a 8 port switch to it. While this setup is technically more at roughly $125 the Airport Express gives you AirTunes which is a pretty cool feature. I currently have my Xbox, an older PS3 that has wireless G and Slingbox connected this way all thinking they`re wired with plenty of room to expand my wireless living room. If you wanted to save some money you could always configure a $50 wireless router as a wifi extender and use the 4 wired ports in the back.

On episode 1178, the discussion about Apple’s patents made me think what would have happened to the
automobile industry if Henry Ford had patented his ideas.

According to wikipedia, Ford was the first to place the steering wheel on the left, in the Model T,
and all other automobile companies soon copied that idea. Imagine if Ford had patented steering
wheel placement, and all other car companies has been prevented from placing the steering wheel on
the left of the vehicle?

That may too trivial an example … so what if Ford had patented the idea of an assembly line?
Would modern industry even exist?
