A tiny sampling of Skinit's phone-case designs.

Skinit

Modern smartphones look really cool -- sleek, shiny, curvy, sexy. But here's the rub: It's borderline insane to carry one around without a case. Because gravity!

Seriously, I've been on the business end of that dang thing, and a cracked phone is not funny. So as much as it pains me to put my precious in a case, I put my precious in a case.

Thankfully, there are several million case options to choose from, and Skinit offers most of them. Specifically, you can customize a case with the image of your choice, or choose from a huge library of existing designs.

And it gets better: Today only, when you buy one Skinit case or skin, you'll get one free! That's after applying coupon code CNET2015 at checkout. Shipping adds $2-3.

Just to clarify, although I've mostly been talking phones and cases, Skinit also offers skins -- high-quality vinyl decals -- for a wide variety of devices: laptops, tablets, game controllers, even GoPros. And the BOGO deal applies there as well.

It's just my two cents, but a skin (or skinned case) is so much cooler than your typical monochrome covering. I mean, who wouldn't dig a Captain America shield? Or a Michigan State Spartans logo? How about flowers, flags or fantasy? Anyone for Star Wars?

You get the idea. Skinit has something for everyone. I showed my son the Gollum phone case and he just about went bananas. (He also demanded we order it on the spot, to which I said, "Better fetch out your wallet, then." Parenting!)

Needless to say, with the holidays approaching, a BOGO deal like this can cover some gift bases very nicely. Hit the comments and let me know which design you're thinking about.

Bonus deal: Calling all Mac users! Ending today, the MacHeist Hall of Fame Bundle lets you name your own price (as long as it's at least $15) for 10 Mac apps, a collection with a combined value of $817. I can't claim to be familiar with any of them, but even if you're interested in just a few of the apps, it's a pretty amazing deal. And 10 percent of the proceeds goes to your choice of 10 charities (or all of them if you'd rather). Good stuff.
