Internet connections are causing security problems for businesses. According to a study conducted by consulting firm Ernst & Young, one out of every five corporations connected to the Net reported an attempted or successful computer break-in during the last 12 months.

Nearly half of the 1,290 companies surveyed reported a loss as the result of hackers, sabotage, viruses, corporate espionage, and employee errors.

Companies are fighting back. Nearly 80 percent of the respondents had at least one full-time information-security officer, and polling indicates that most companies are taking further steps to better protect their information systems.
