BT outlines directory service

British telecommunications company BT plans to launch a service in the United Kingdom that could eventually see the company storing customers' personal information online, the company said Tuesday. Billed by BT as a "one-stop information service", the new operation for multimedia directory inquiries will be accessible via the Internet as well as by telephone. Called BT Directories, the service will let users obtain weather forecasts, sports scores, share prices and cinema listings for a fee, the company said. BT expects to launch the service by the end of the year.

The company has said its long-term strategy for its directories business includes an option for customers to store their personal information--such as telephone numbers and addresses of family and friends and bank details.
