Boca finds a secure niche
Modem maker Boca Research enters the PC security market with a new suite of applications that protects PCs from network-based intrusions.
The new software package, called Data Secure, represents the multimedia and data communications company's first foray into the applications market. Data Secure includes a personal firewall for PCs, as well as virus and unauthorized-access scanning capabilities for data files, electronic mail, system components, and the Internet.
The company may be taking advantage of the increased attention being paid to security in the networked age, especially in light of recent revelations regarding security flaws in Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser and Sun Microsystem's Java Virtual Machine.
The new product is a shift away from Boca Research's previous focus on PC modem hardware and accompanying software. But the company may find the security market tough to crack with the dominance of entrenched players like McAfee and Symantec.
The new software will be demonstrated at CeBIT '97 next week in Hannover, Germany. Data Secure will be released this month at an estimated street price of $59 to $79.
