<b>Mac OS 8.x: Hard drive icons disappear?

Many users are reporting on Apple's Discussion Boards that their hard drive icons occasionally "disappear" after updating to Mac OS 8.x. Apple Support suggests that a non-current version of SAM may be at least one cause. Elisabeth Humphrey said the problem was lessened after going from 8.0 to 8.1. Jay Menna claims that it first happened to him when the Mac OS 8.1 Installer updated his disk driver via Drive Setup - even though he was using HDT 2.5 at the time.
