Bill Murray may suit up for new 'Ghostbusters' after all

The all-female lead cast for the new "Ghostbusters" movie could have some classic company in the form of a Bill Murray cameo.

That tingling sensation running up your spine isn't caused by the cold spectral fingers of undead spirits. It's the arrival of a strong rumor involving actor Bill Murray showing up for the new "Ghostbusters" movie. The Hollywood Reporter said Sunday that it has confirmed Murray will make an appearance in the upcoming film, though there aren't currently any details on his potential role.

The third "Ghostbusters" movie is currently filming and is headed up by a who's-who of comedic actresses, including Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. Fans have been speculating about whether or not any of the fellas from the first two films will make cameo appearances in the latest installment.

Murray played Dr. Peter Venkman in the 1984 "Ghostbusters" and the 1989 sequel "Ghostbusters II." Murray has previously been reluctant to be involved in a third film. Variety reported last year that he had considered several script treatments, but that none of them enticed him into returning to the role.

If the Hollywood Reporter story turns out to be true, then fans will rejoice and there will be an extra thread of continuity for the franchise. There is no information as to the source of the confirmation. If the rumor turns out to be false, then we can all go cry into our proton packs.

Though the movie isn't due out until 2016, "Ghostbusters" fever is running hot. Director Paul Feig has been updating fans through a series of Twitter pictures showing props, costumes and the cast duded up in the full ghost-battling regalia.
