<b>G3 Macs and the PlainTalk microphone: a problem?

Michael Magonigal writes that he cannot effectively use the PlainTalk microphone with his G3 desktop Mac: "It will not properly record a sound in the Sound and Monitors control panel or in SimpleText. You have to hold the mike up to your lips to get any sound to record. I am also unable to talk on Internet Phone; those I have tried to talk with can barely hear me." He notes that a thread on Apple's Discussion Boards confirms that other users are having the same problem.
