Battlefield fans take note -- the popular shooter could soon be headed to your smart phone or tablet, according to publisher EA's mobile development boss.

EA's Frank Gibeau told the New York Times that the mobile version of Battlefield will be "High-end and high-performance", going on to say, "It's our bet that we can successfully pull that off."

EA already owns several popular mobile games, most notably FIFA 14, and Real Racing 3. The gaming giant is also responsible for The Simpsons: Tapped Out and The Sims FreePlay.

EA's mobile games have become a major part of its traditionally console-focused roster -- so much so that the publisher announced in the summer that Apple was its biggest retail partner.

EA's mobile games have proved controversial with gamers, some of whom dislike the publisher's propensity to give you the game for free, then ask for extra cash later to unlock extra features, or make the games easier.

Gibeau's words come shortly ahead of the release of Battlefield 4, which hits Europe on 1 November.

The much-anticipated game is headed to PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as well as next-gen consoles Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
