Beginning tomorrow, consumers can use 3Com's Palm VII to purchase books and CD titles at Barnesandnoble.com or locate the nearest Barnes & Noble retail store, an executive said. Users can also send electronic greeting cards as well as view reviews and listings of top music and book titles.
"We're focused on content," said Barnesandnoble.com chief executive officer Jonathan Bulkeley. "We want to deliver whenever and wherever people are."
Barnesandnoble.com's latest technological offering comes almost two months after archrival Amazon.com announced a similar deal. Heading into the holiday season, the two biggest players in the online book-selling business are striving to outdo the other in product and service offerings.
Although there are similarities, the two companies have decidedly different strategies.
Bulkeley said while Barnes & Noble wants to deliver products to its customers through a variety of mediums, whether in store or online, the company plans to remain focused on its core areas such as books and music. Amazon has been spreading into new categories such as toys, home-improvement products and auctions.
