Dow Jones Newswires initially reported that Barnes & Noble will not be a part of Microsoft's event. Business Insider, which initially picked up the Dow Jones report, independently confirmed with book retailer that it isn't participating the event.

The strategy has already drawn some critics, who wonder if Microsoft is jumping the gun by unveiling its own product so early, and whether it will hurt some of its longtime partners, who have already committed to making tablets based off of Windows 8.
