ATM Network Set for Russian Cities

CNET News staff
ATMS are coming! ATMs are coming! Applied Communications, a British company, will work with Rossiyskiy Kredit Bank--the second largest in Russia--to bring ATM cards to the masses.

RKB will use Applied Communications' software to set up 50 ATM machines by the end of the year and 200 by the end of 1996, officials said.

During the second phase of the project, the ATM network will be linked to Europay along with an interface to the European Security Module for card verification certificates. Future plans call for adding an online point-of-sale link that would obviate paper MasterCard vouchers. Smart cards are also under consideration.
