ATI updates graphics software

ATI Technologies released new drivers and other software for its graphics chips on Wednesday, including an unusual new feature that supports overclocking. A new Overdrive tool include in version 3.8 of the company's Catalyst software package monitors the speed and temperature of the video chip to allow it to run past rated speeds, a controversial practice known as overclocking among PC buffs.

The new release also include enhanced crash-recovery tools for dealing with hardware hiccups, a revamped interface, new routines for high-level graphics effects and expanded support for the Linux operating system. The software, which works with all recent ATI-based graphics cards, is available for download now from ATI.
