AT&T today announced that AT&T WorldNet Service customers who charge to their AT&T Universal Card will receive financial liability protection for purchases charged on the Internet.

Card members who encounter fraudulent transactions by unauthorized users will be protected. "This announcement is not only about making it safe for consumers to use their credit cards to shop the Net, but equally if not more important, is about making consumers feel safe when they use their credit card," said Tom Evslin, vice president of AT&T Gateway Services.

The company will also waive the $50 deductible in the case of fraudulent use, according to Evslin. "What's important to consumers is that AT&T is willing to put its money where its mouth is," he said. Any risk involved is taken by AT&T and not the consumer, he added.

The service will be available in about two months, according to officials.
