Day of the Dead, also called Dia de los Muertos, is celebrated Nov. 1 and 2 in Mexico, other Latin American countries and parts of the US to honor deceased family members and friends.
Traditionally, people make elaborate altars decorated with mementos, photos and food as gifts to the spirits of dead loved ones. The altars also display colorfully painted sugar skulls called calaveras.
Hughes' Lego sculptures of skulls, which resemble calaveras, include vibrant reds, grays, yellows and blues, and feature decorative geometric patterns made from more than 600 bricks.
The skull sculptures measure 6.5 inches wide by 3.8 inches deep by 10.2 inches high (16.6 centimeters by 9.6 centimeters by 26 centimeters), and Hughes recently started selling them on his Etsy store for $402 (about £307, AU $528) each.
Even though Day of the Dead isn't until November, these skulls might just inspire Lego fans to build elaborate calaveras of their own. Or just to add a bit of unusual home decor.
