Apple's iOS 7.0.6 passes 50% adoption rate -- report

The latest flavor of iOS hit the halfway mark on March 3, according to Onswipe, which creates mobile Web sites for the business world.

Apple's iOS 7.0.6 is nestled on the devices of more than half of all iOS users, at least those tracked by Onswipe.

In data sent to CNET on Wednesday, Onswipe found that global adoption of iOS 7.0.6 quickly rose following its launch on February 21. From a 10 percent reach on February 22, the latest iOS update had won over 30 percent of users on February 26, 40 percent on February 28, and just over 50 percent on March 3.

Onswipe's mobile market and data cover more than 17.7 million iOS devices around the world. That figure is just a small slice of the total number of iOS devices globally -- last September Apple revealed that it was on track to sell its 700 millionth iOS device. But the data is still a good indicator of the growing demand for iOS 7.0.6.

Apple rolled out the latest version specifically to patch a security hole that would allow an attacker to access and modify data supposedly protected by SSL (Security Sockets Layer).

So what's up next?

iOS 7.1 could launch as early as next week, according to one report. The 7.1 beta has been in the hands of testers and developers since November, so it should be ripe for a final release.
