Apple TV has only 3 of the top 25 TV shows

The Apple TV's biggest current weakness is TV content, with the iTunes Store offering only 3 out of the top 25 TV shows for streaming rentals.

The Apple TV's selection of TV shows to stream is limited to just ABC, Fox, BBC, and Disney for now. Matthew Moskovciak/CNET

In our full review, we awarded the Apple TV a rare perfect 10 in the Design category (7.3 overall rating) for its small size and superb interface, but eye candy is no substitute for content. Our major complaint with the Apple TV is the lack of TV content and a look at the most recent ratings for network TV shows shows why it's such as a problem. Apple TV only offers current streaming rentals for 3 of the top 25 TV shows last week, using the all ages demographic, and the competing Amazon Video On Demand (VOD) service doesn't fare much better, with 5 out of 25.

The situation doesn't get much better for Apple if we look at the top shows in the 18-49 age demographic either, which is probably more aligned with the Apple TV's audience. In that demographic, the Apple TV has 5 out of the top 25 shows, but Amazon's VOD service has 11.

It's also worth pointing out that the Apple TV currently doesn't have any streaming option for cable shows, such as "Mad Men", many of which are available on Amazon's service.

Our two main takeaways from the comparison are:

1. Amazon VOD and devices that support it are currently a better option than the Apple TV for those looking to cancel their cable subscription and get TV over the internet.

2. Both Amazon and Apple need a lot more content before it's an option for mainstream TV watchers.
