Apple should make an Android phone, co-founder reckons

Apple's co-founder Steve Wozniak is always good value. Previous highlights include how much he loves Windows Phone, and what was wrong with the Jobs film. But his latest interview is his best yet.

Speaking to Wired, he said Apple should make a mobile phone that runs Android. That's Android, as in arch rival Google's mobile operating system. Apple should sell this Android-running device alongside its iOS-powered iPhone, Woz reckons.

"There's nothing that would keep Apple out of the Android market as a secondary phone market," Woz said "We [Apple] could compete very well. People like the precious looks of stylings and manufacturing that we do in our products compared to the other Android offerings. We could play in two arenas at the same time."

It might sound crazy, but just recently we've seen a few leaks concerning Nokia's supposed Android mobile, codenamed the Nokia X, or Normandy, depending on which leak you listen to. And Nokia's phone division is in the process of being taken over by Microsoft.

Having said that, I'm willing to bet Apple won't release an Android phone any time soon.

Woz also defended Apple's lack of innovation in the last year. "The great products really come from secret development," he said. "You put small teams of great people on them and they aren't bothered by other people commenting on what they're doing while they're doing it.

"A whole new category of products doesn't happen very often. It might happen once a decade. Sometimes you have to wait for one of those to come about."

And he stuck up for his former company for not cramming features for features' sake into the iPhone. "If you have something really good, don't change it, don't screw it up... People don't really choose their smart phones based on features. I think Apple is superior at being able to say no."
