Apple iPod: good-bye, PortalPlayer; hello, Samsung
According to a Samsung exec, the company has been selected by Apple to provide processors for future versions of the iPod. Presumably, these chips will take over the vacuum left by PortalPlayer, which was dismissed by Apple a week ago. Samsung already supplies flash-memory chips for the iPod Shuffle and the iPod Nano. Jon Kang, senior VP for the technical marketing group at Samsung Semiconductor, reportedly refers to the new chip as a "PortalPlayer killer."
Does this mean we'll be seeing the rumored 8GB and/or 10GB iPod Nano soon? I'd say that's a good bet, though we find it strange that Samsung will be supplying key hardware to a major competitor.
