Apple iPad 3 won't arrive this year

Industry experts are scotching rumours of an iPad 3 launching in time for Christmas.

The rumoured launch of a new iPad before the end of the year is looking less and less likely. Industry experts are scotching rumours of an iPad 3 arriving in time for Christmas, so we'll have to wait until 2012.

JP Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz, talking to AllThingsD, pricks the balloon of speculation among investors that Apple has a new iPad waiting in the wings. Although there are prototypes of a new slate on the slate -- so to speak -- there's no suggestion that a third iPad is anywhere near rolling off production lines just yet.

There ain't no rumour like an Apple rumour, so here's our round-up of iPad 3 rumours.

Meanwhile the next iPhone almost certainly will launch before the end of the year. There may be a full-blown iPhone 5 and a cheaper iPhone 4S -- we'll find out any day. The tension is unbearable!

Why are we so keen to see a new iPad, less than a year after the iPad 2 launched? Because the iPad 2 made relatively minor changes to the original, barring the slimmer case. It's certainly a thing of beauty with its tapered edges and slender frame, but we always want more -- we're insatiable like that.

In particular, we'd like to see an iPad with a beefed-up screen. The current screen hasn't been upgraded from the previous model, which is kind of a disappointment when compared to the eye-melting retina display on the iPhone 4. We want our movies to look glorious -- especially as rival slates such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 are starting to boast all manner of AMOLED high-definition super-screens.

What would you like to see in the next generation of iPad? And if the iPad 3 isn't immediately on the horizon, which rival tablets could be a serious contender in the meantime? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below or on our Facebook page.
