Stand by your beds: Apple has officially confirmed a 22 October announcement. Invitations have been delivered to press for the launch event, expected to reveal a new iPad, with the cryptic tag line, "We still have a lot to cover."

The next generation of iPad tablet will join the new iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C smart phones, recently hitting shop shelves. Perhaps the new tablet will boast a fingerprint sensor or 64-bit chip like the 5S.

The next iPad mini could also add a high-resolution Retina display.

It's also about time Apple showed off more of OS X Mavericks, the next software update for MacBook laptops and iMac computers. And there's still a lot more to be said about the 12-core pedal-bin PC that is the new Mac Pro -- you know, the powerhouse computer that looks like Darth Vader's ashtray.

Doubtless it hasn't escaped Apple's notice that the announcement takes place on the same day as a similar event held by Nokia in Abu Dhabi. Nokia is expected to unveil a new Lumia line-up, possibly including a tablet or phablet. Oh, and it's the same day the new Microsoft Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 hit shops.

That said, Nokia reveals its new kit at 8am on Tuesday 22 October, while Apple's San Francisco event kicks off at 6pm.
