Welcome to CNET Australia's App of the Day, where you can see some of the coolest, silliest and most useful apps in action.
Some of my favourite TV shows over the years have come out of the BBC: Doctor Who, The Goodies, Red Dwarf, League of Gentlemen, Blackadder. When coupled with the dearth of decent shows on free-to-air TV in Australia, the BBC iPlayer app seemed like a lovely present from the UK. There are a few shows that you can watch for free, but to appreciate the full wonder you need a subscription, which costs you AU$9.50 per month or AU$90 per year. For that money, you get access to a massive BBC catalogue, with more shows being added all the time.
I've been having a wonderful time revisiting old favourites — the back seasons of Doctor Who, for instance — as well as discovering new things to love, such as short plays by Anton Checkhov performed by some of Britain's best comedic actors. And if you have Apple TV, you can stream it from your iDevice to the big screen.
