AOL buys Egenera blade servers

America Online has purchased Egenera blade servers to run the online mapping application of its MapQuest subsidiary, the companies plan to announce Thursday. Marlboro, Mass.-based Egenera sells high-end blade servers: thin two- or four-processor systems that plug into a larger chassis, with one blade able to take over if another fails. The new customer indicates some success in Egenera's effort to move outside its core customer base, financial services companies.

Egenera's Intel server-based systems can run either Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Microsoft Windows 2003. MapQuest will run its application on Linux, the companies said. They declined, however, to release information about the number of servers or the value of the deal.
