Apple Computer (AAPL) today named Gareth C.C. Chang to its board of directors, the second new director since CEO Gilbert Amelio came aboard earlier this year.

Chang, senior vice president of marketing for Hughes Electronics, will become the eighth director. The company, which has operated with authorization for a nine-member board, has been working to fill out its lineup, spokeswoman Cindy McCaffrey said.

"Gareth brings a depth to the board with his Asian-Pacific background," she said.

Earlier this year, A.C. "Mike" Markkula Jr. stepped down from his position as chairman to vice chairman. McCaffrey said Markula has not discussed or announced any plans to leave the board.
