The latest Angry Birds game is another runaway success, smashing Rovio's previous record.

It was always bound to be a huge smash, with the meeting of two iconic universes, but Angry Birds Star Wars has hit the top of the iTunes chart just two and a half hours after being released, BGR reports.

Rovio posted an update on its website celebrating the milestone. It smashed the previous record set by its predecessor, Bad Piggies. That particular game hit the top spot in a little over three hours. Slow coach.

There's no word on how many downloads the latest instalment has had so far, but expect it to be huge, much like the rest of the Angry Birds series.

The reviews have been glowing, with Angry Birds Star Wars being praised as the best in the franchise. That in itself is no mean feat, considering how many die hard Star Wars obsessives there are out there who'd consider anything with a sense of humour to be sacrilege.

The game puts you in a pretty authentic Star Wars universe, except it's been Angry Birds-ified a little. So there's the Pig Star instead of the Death Star, Darth Vader has become Dark Lord of the Pigs, and so on. But there are lightsabers. And that's pretty much all I ask for from a Star Wars game to be honest, ever since Super Star Wars on the SNES.

With a new Star Wars movie coming our way in 2015, it's a good time to start getting on board with the series if you haven't already. Lucasfilm announced Star Wars: Episode VII will be written by Michael Arndt, the Oscar-winning scribe behind Little Miss Sunshine and Toy Story 3. The plot remains a mystery at the moment, but rest assured, Arndt is a big fan, so should do the franchise proud.
