An iPhone 3G can run Game Center

A few file changes is all that stand between a jailbroken iPhone 3G and iOS 4's Game Center app.

With a little file modding, jailbroken iPhone 3G owners can get Game Center. Scott Stein/CNET

I bought an iPhone 3G two months before the 3GS was released, so whenever Apple announces some functionality I can't try, I get kind of angry. With iOS 4.1, for example, came Game Center. However, it looks like some mods to .plist files in the GameCenter.ipa file for the 3GS will get it up and running on a jailbroken iPhone 3G running iOS 4.1.

Web site Redmond Pie has video proving it can be done. Unfortunately, the specific modifications aren't posted because they violate Apple's DRM.

However, after watching the video, I'm not so sure it's worth the effort. It runs OK, but it's far from snappy. Guess it might be time to just suck it up and buy a new phone.
