AMD revs up Opteron for Ducati

Advanced Micro Devices' Opteron server chip is going racing. The chipmaker on Thursday said that Ducati Corse, the racing division of motorcycle manufacturer Ducati Motor Holding, will use an Opteron-based server cluster and Opteron workstations for research and development. Ducati will use the computers to perform tasks such as computational fluid dynamics calculations and to simulate engine designs, AMD said.

AMD also has become the official technology partner of the Ducati Marlboro racing team, the Sunnyvale, Calif., chipmaker said. Earlier this year, AMD announced a similar sponsorship and technology partnership with the United States Postal Service Pro Cycling Team.
