Advanced Micro Devices on Tuesday launched its newest Athlon chip for workstations and servers. The new chip, Athlon MP 2800+, promises better performance for single- and dual-processor versions of two varieties of beefed-up computers. The 2800+ will list for $275 in 1,000-unit lots, AMD said.

AMD has already introduced its next generation of server chips, the Opteron. But the company is expected to continue to sell Athlon MP for some time to support customers who have products based on the processor. Going forward, AMD will focus primarily on the Opteron, the company said.
