"Alexa, what's happening on September 14th?"
Go ahead and ask her if you've got one of Amazon's smart speakers handy. The virtual voice assistant responds with the following tease:
"I promised I wouldn't tell, but a visit to London has always been on my bucket list."
The London visit in question would seem to be an upcoming Amazon event. The online mega-retailer sent out invitations Friday morning, and speculation is already starting to swirl that Alexa's long-awaited arrival in the UK could be on the agenda.
Alexa debuted in November 2014 with the arrival of the Amazon Echo, a cylindrical smart speaker that you control with your voice. Aside from streaming music, Alexa can offer up weather forecasts, bad jokes and news reports (including reports from CNET). She's also become a capable connected-home control point, with voice-activated controls for a growing number of smart home devices.
Since then, Alexa has remained a US-only offering despite Amazon's claims that the goal is for Alexa to be everywhere. If expansion to the UK is indeed in the cards for the September 14 event, then that will be a first step toward that end, and one that British techies have been awaiting. For now, Amazon isn't talking (even though Alexa is).
