Amazon to break out Prime Music as Spotify competitor, report says

Amazon already made its Prime Video service a stand-alone option earlier this year.

Amazon plans to give anyone the option of subscribing to its Prime Music streaming service for $9.99 a month, according to a report by Reuters.

That would put Prime Music in direct competition with streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music, which also charge about $10 a month for unlimited access to a trove of millions of songs. However, Prime Music has a more limited catalog than those rivals. For Amazon's offering to be competitive at the same price, it would need to cobble together different deals with labels that give it more current hits and a deeper back catalog.

To access Prime Music currently, you must be a member of Amazon's Prime program, best known for free, two-day shipping. That costs $99 a year or $10.99 a month.

Earlier this year, Amazon made a similar move with its Prime Video service, allowing any customer to sign up to watch its catalog of TV shows and movies for $8.99, a dollar cheaper than main rival Netflix.

Amazon declined to comment on the report.
