Amazon: Third-gen Kindle is all-time bestseller
The latest Kindle beats out "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)" for the top spot, the online retail giant reports.
Move over, Harry Potter, there's a new retail champion on Amazon.
The online retailer announced today that its third-generation Kindle, which features a version boasting both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity and another offering only Wi-Fi, is now the bestselling product of all time on Amazon. It bested "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)."
On Christmas Day, "more people turned on new Kindles for the first time, downloaded more Kindle Buy Once, Read Everywhere apps, and purchased more Kindle books than on any other day in history," Amazon reported.
Unfortunately, Amazon still continues to leave actual unit sales figures out of its Kindle announcements. But considering the e-reader is the top-selling product of all time on the online retail site, it's safe to say sales are quite high. Back in October, Amazon announced that Kindle sales were already up over holiday sales in 2009.
Beyond the Kindle, Amazon offered up some interesting statistics about holiday shopping.
Amazon reported that it sold the most products in a single day on November 29, catering to 13.7 million orders worldwide. The company said 158 items were purchased every second on the site that day. On its "peak day" during the holiday shopping season, it shipped more than 9 million products around the world.
Amazon also reported that consumers were most likely to buy an iPad, iPhone, or Android device on a Sunday. BlackBerry shoppers were most likely to add items to their shopping carts on Fridays.
In the electronics space, the Wi-Fi-only Kindle and Kindle 3G took the top spots based on unit sales between November 14 and December 19. They were followed by the 8GB iPod Touch. Call of Duty: Black Ops was the bestselling video game during that period, followed by Just Dance 2 and Donkey Kong Country Returns. On the wireless side, Samsung's Captivate was the bestselling handset, followed by the HTC Droid Incredible and the Motorola Droid X.
"Inception" was the bestselling movie, while "The Confession: A Novel" by John Grisham led Kindle book sales. Kanye West's "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" was the top seller on Amazon MP3 during the period.
