Amazon site targets visually impaired

Amazon.com on Thursday launched a version of its Web site tailored for visually impaired users. Based on the same technology platform that Amazon uses for customers who access its site through wireless devices, the site limits the amount of text and graphics on each page. The site is designed to allow users of screen-access software, which typically reads aloud each item on a Web page, to easily navigate Amazon. Amazon had offered visually impaired customers a text-only version of its site, which had been in place since Amazon launched in 1995. Amazon representatives said the new site was launched in response to increasing requests from customers.
