Amazon has expanded its one-hour delivery service to yet another market.
Prime Now, which offers consumers extra-speedy delivery on tens of thousands of products, is launching in Atlanta, Amazon announced Thursday. The service offers Prime members one-hour delivery but at a cost of $8. Two-hour delivery is free. In Atlanta, Prime Now will be available to customers from 8 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.
Prime Now will roll out to certain Atlanta ZIP codes starting Thursday and then expand to more ZIP codes soon, Amazon said. All Prime members can download the Prime Now app for both iOS and Android and will receive a notice when the service hits their location.
Through Prime Now's quick delivery, Amazon is trying to top other online vendors while at the same time competing with traditional retail stores. Amazon already provides same-day delivery onand in certain markets. It also offers a that promises same-day delivery on a range of consumer items. The company has even been testing the use of delivery drones, though it's required by the US's Federal Aviation Administration.
Prime Now is also another feature aimed at convincing more shoppers to sign up for Amazon Prime. The retailer's Prime subscription service costs $99 a year and offers free two-day shipping, a huge library of streaming movies and TV shows, Prime Music and other benefits.
Prime Now is currently available in Baltimore, Brooklyn,, Manhattan and Miami. Amazon promises more cities on the rollout schedule for 2015.
