Amazon Kindle Fire selling millions

Amazon has broken its usual silence on sales figures to reveal that the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet and new Amazon Kindle ebook reader are doing boffo business. The online retail giant says it's sold no less than 3 million Kindles in the past three weeks.

That's including the range of Kindle ebook readers and the Kindle Fire tablet, which is currently only available in the US. For the third week in a row, folks have shelled out for over a million Kindle devices.

The Kindle Fire Android tablet is the best selling, most gifted, and most wished-for product out of Amazon's entire range of products, despite going on sale less than three months ago.

Sales are showing no sign of slowing, either, to the point that an Amazonian boss says, "We've already sold millions of units, and we're building millions more to meet the high demand."

Demand is high thanks to the reasonable price -- so reasonable, word on the street is that Amazon is losing money on every Kindle Fire sold.

The Kindle Fire is rumoured to be crossing the pond as soon as January, but that's likely to be wishful thinking. It's built around streaming music and movies and more, which are notoriously complicated to sort out licensing for in different countries.

It took years for the original Kindle to make it to Blighty, but fingers crossed the Kindle Fire and its innovative custom version of Android won't be so tardy. Read our thoughts here on whether we think it's worth waiting for.
